This iconic umbrella is crafted by Hiyoshiya's artisans with over a century of expertise in Kyo-wagasa (traditional Kyoto umbrellas). Carefully selected materials, including washi paper and bamboo, are skillfully combined to create this exceptional wagasa.

Officially approved by tea ceremony masters of the Imperial House of Japan, the Nodategasa umbrella is historically linked to outdoor tea ceremonies. Dating back to the Warring States period, tea ceremonies were embraced during hunting or before battles. In 1975, during the first visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Japan, a welcoming tea ceremony took place at Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto, featuring the use of Hiyoshiya’s traditional Nodate umbrella.

Conveying the traditional beauty and hospitality of Japan, Nodategasa is an expression of the Wabi-Sabi lifestyle in which the Japanese live in simplicity and harmony with nature.

Originally crafted for tea ceremonies, the Nodategasa is nowadays frequently incorporated into interior designs gracing modern interiors, hotels, or luxury traditional Japanese restaurants. Also regarded as an amulet against malevolent forces, this umbrellaI is still prominently featured in events like the Kyoto Gion and Aoi Festivals, adorning the processions in stunning red colors.

Reflecting delicate craftsmanship and design, the Nodategasa Honshiki is available in four sizes for the unicolor model and in two sizes for intricate bicolor patterns of red and white, and green and white.

This item is "bicolor."Please click here for "unicolor".

The Honshiki-Nodategasa shares the silhouette reminiscent of a Bangasa but in a larger form. The surface of the washi paper is treated with a plant-based oil known as flaxseed oil, applied and then dried in the sun for waterproofing.

Customization options, including inserting names, family crests, logos, and unique color variations, are available to make each piece truly special. Elevate your space with the timeless elegance of Nodategasa – a symbol of traditional Japanese culture and hospitality.
