The versatile Ryoten umbrella, suitable for both sunny and rainy days, is lighter and more sustainable than traditional vinyl umbrellas. Inspired by the traditional Ryoten used during the Edo period, Hiyoshiya has reimagined the umbrella's design to seamlessly integrate with modern lifestyles, ensuring both comfort and practicality. After 13 years of refinement, the development of Ryoten has successfully combined elements from both modern and traditional umbrellas.

Embracing Eco-Friendly Tradition: A Remarkably Lightweight Umbrella for Sun and Rain

In the meticulous crafting of the Ryoten, Hiyoshiya employs 36 bamboo sticks to form its framework, complemented by durable washi-textured non-woven fabric. Diverging from the norm of western umbrellas, which typically incorporate 8-16 sticks, the Ryoten showcases double to quadruple the quantity of bamboo sticks. Intricately woven together,  these sticks collectively create an umbrella that weighs approximately half as much as its Western counterparts.
In Japan, approximately 6000-7000 vinyl umbrellas are discarded annually. Ryoten addresses this issue by being designed for easy disassembly when being discarded. With a structure primarily crafted from natural materials such as wood and bamboo, Ryoten is inherently more environment friendly.

Convenience and Style to Make Your Outings Fun

Experience the traditional charm of the Ryoten umbrella with its ingenious inward-closing mechanism. Unlike Western umbrellas that, when closed, extend the fabric in a U shape along the outside of the frame, Ryoten takes a different approach. Its fabric gracefully closes inwards, skillfully avoiding water droplets from reaching your clothes. A thoughtful design that combines functionality and elegance.

Unlike the traditional wagasa, the middle stick has been enhanced with the incorporation of an aluminum slide shaft. When not in use, it can be conveniently shortened to approximately 54cm, allowing it to be compactly packed into the original umbrella bag, complete with a shoulder strap. This modification upgrades the ease and convenience of carrying this umbrella.
Ryoten is available in four traditional Japanese colors, all of which complement both Japanese and Western attire, adding a stylish touch to any ensemble.

Sustainable Durability: A Craftsmen-Repairable Umbrella for Prolonged Use

Crafted with Care: Ryoten, like traditional Japanese umbrellas, are individually handmade by skilled craftsmen. Their repairable design ensures that even if a bone breaks, it can be fixed. Embracing an umbrella that stands the test of time prompts a reconsideration of disposable lifestyles.
