the SOU - SOU textiles and the delicate structure of the bamboo bones spreading
in a radial form.
An elaborate opening and closing mechanism encapsulates the skills of traditional craftsmanship and allows the Kotori lamp to spread and fold easily.
Based on the philosophy "Tradition is continuous innovation," the craftsmanship of Hiyoshiya, a Japanese umbrella maker, has been passed down for over 160 years. The encounter with SOU - SOU, a leading textile brand, has led to the creation of the Hiyoshiya KOTORI ST Pendant x SOU SOU ». Combining tradition with modern design, the KOTORI proposes a new Japanese lifestyle from Kyoto.
Beauty and functionality - derived from the Kyoto Wagasa umbrella for rich quality of life.
Created with natural materials and Japanese sensibilities, the simplicity of the Kotori lamp is of timeless beauty and suitable for traditional Japanese or contemporary interiors.`
A design for the continuation of tradition
The philosophy of SOU - SOU, a leading textile brand from Kyoto is to develop and promote a new Japanese culture.
While using traditional materials and techniques, SOU - SOU creates products that cater to modern lifestyles. The brand name SOU - SOU is actually derived from the affirmative interjection « sou, sou ».
Used in Japanese conversations, it embodies the Japanese spirit of accepting and acknowledging others. The SOU - SOU concept for new products is based on the idea of incorporating good things from the past while adapting to the ever-changing life-styles.
The SOU - SOU textiles shades
SOU - SOU expresses the Japanese sensibilities through textiles. When using the SOU SOU textile shades for the KOTORI lighting systems, the change of the lamp’s style is impressive and astounding.
The following three designs have been selected in the collaboration between HIYOSHIYA and SOU - SOU
The first design is SOU - SOU’s iconic «SO-SU-U»
"SO-SU-U" is based on the universal and endearing design of the Arabic numerals. The ubiquity of these numerals transcends nationality, gender and age.
The second design «MARI»
The second design «Mari» is inspired by «Kemari,» a court game that became very popular among the nobility during the Heian period. The players kicked a ball at a certain height and competed with each other for the highest number of kicks. The nobles set up practice grounds in their residences and spent their days practicing. For some reason, the "bouncing motion" of a ball has always fascinated people and was inspiration for the «Mari» pattern.
The third design «FUMI»
Hiragana is also an important component of the Japanese cultural identity.
During the Heian period, when "The Tale of Genji" was written, poems were composed on Japanese paper scrolls and sent to each other.
Depending on the poem, love would be fulfilled or not. Especially women used hiragana to express themselves in writing. Their elegantly flowing brush strokes inspired the design for «Fumi».
All three patterns were jointly developed by SOU-SOU and Hiyoshiya, in order to create lamps that provide a feeling of well-being and enjoyment in daily life.
The ST LAMP SERIES - beautiful and affordable
The ST (Standard) series inherits the beauty of the "KOTORI" series, but at a more affordable price. Similar to the HG (High Grade) series, the craftsmen connect one by one a total of 80 evenly split and processed Japanese bamboo bones with cotton thread.
The difference lies in the shade and the specifications of the lighting fixture.
A pendant with two 100W lightbulbs, a 3-step lighting adjustment - suitable for a space up to 16 m2
This pendant lamp puts an emphasis on brightness and uses a two 100W lightbulbs. A single lamp comfortably illuminates a room of about 16 m2. The brightness can be adjusted to three different levels just by pulling the attached string.
The three shades open and close like a Japanese Wagasa umbrella
One of the amazing features of the KOTORI lamp shade is that it can be opened and closed like a Japanese umbrella. The shade can be removed from the lamp and folded compactly for storage. This mechanism makes it possible to change the shades according to the season or your mood and bring a fresh design to your home.
Japan Design has won awards at home and abroad
In 2006, the "KOTORI" lighting structure was introduced in the Japanese market. Since 2008 it has been exhibited at several international trade fairs and enjoys growing popularity in Japan as well as abroad.
The beauty of the sunlight passing through the bamboo and washi paper structure of the Wagasa umbrella inspired HIyoshiya to create other products that combine both of these contrasting materials. Hiyoshiya's first goal was to create a lighting system. The "KOTORI" series, developed by a team of craftsmen, brand producers, lighting designers, and coordinators has received numerous awards, including the Good Design Award or thee Small and Medium Enterprise Agency Special Award. It is now sold and appreciated in over 15 countries around the world.
