A Sake Cup that Captures Japanese Scenery
The Guinomi Sake Cup, fully coated with 'Tame-nuri' lacquer, features a wide rim and a shallow bottom. This design, conceived by maki-e artist Kenji Yamamoto, beautifully showcases the intricate maki-e artwork within the cup. 'Tame-nuri' involves applying transparent lacquer over a red undercoat, creating a depth of color where the red lacquer subtly shows through.
Setsugetsu-ka features winter's snow, autumn's moon, and spring's flowers as motifs, capturing the beauty of Japan's natural scenery across the four seasons within the sake cup.
The dragonfly motif Tombo symbolizes victory and good fortune. Dragonflies are known as "kachimushi" (victory insects) because they only move forward, never retreat. Tombo captures the spirit of relentless progress as dragonflies gracefully dance within the cup.
