Raku ceramics have a unique softness and warmth as the earthen feel of the clay is still present. The Daigo Kiln has continuously made raku tableware for Japanese cuisine and the molds for the various lids, including the zodiac, have been handed down from generation to generation. Shizuka Shima, the fourth generation master of the Daigo Kiln, has launched « RAKUAMI », a new pottery brand, to transmit the passion she has inherited to as many people as possible. « AKA to KURO », the first tableware series from the Daigo kiln by RAKUAMI, proposes raku tableware for modern life.
AKA to KURO series is the result of a combination of color, technique, and design.
Raku ware dates back to the late 16th century when Chojiro, a tile maker, used the soil (Juraku soil) excavated from the ground when building Jurakudai (a Kyoto palace) under the guidance of the famous tea master Sen no Rikyu. Raku ware has been prized for its unique red (aka-yaki) and black (kuro-yaki) colors, which are due to the firing process and the materials used. Aka-Raku and Kuro-Raku have been handed down to the present day as the most coveted Raku bowls among tea masters.
The « AKA to KURO » series was created in collaboration with a designer to offer modern Japanese tableware that suits contemporary interiors.
Beauty for daily life born from red, black, and white
In addition to using the symbolic raku ware colors of red and black, the dishes are decorated with the white glaze typical of raku ware. The little legs of the vessels are inspired by the traditional Daigo kiln designs.
The "AKA to KURO" series offers raku ware that perfectly suits modern everyday life.
Enjoy various combinations of raku ware in your daily life
The red colors brighten up every dining table and the black colors enhance the food. The delicate and simple pattern, which was created through repeated trial and error, is engraved on the surface and finished with a white glaze.
The soft, earthen texture has a nostalgic and rustic warmth. You can enjoy various combinations, such as a set of red and black with a unified pattern, or a set of different patterns with a unified color.
Raku ware is characterized by the use of Raku clay, which is coarse and contains a lot of air. Due to the firing at relatively low temperatures, the Raku tableware has a soft texture and excellent heat insulation properties. A cup containing hot tea is easy to hold and fits comfortably in the hand. Of course, the cup is also ideal for serving cold beverages as it reduces the condensation on a hot day.
