With a history of over 140 years, Kyoto Kiribako Kougei continues to specialize in the creation of paulownia boxes and tea utensils. As lifestyles evolve, these techniques have been adapted to craft everyday tools. Kyoto Kiribako Kougei is dedicated to transforming its distinctive expertise by seamlessly integrating it into modern-day living.

An Artisan-Crafted Tray featuring a Distinctive Single-Grain Pattern

This meticulously crafted tray showcases a grass and wood-dyed design with a distinctive single-grain pattern.
The intricate process involves skillfully using a plane to carve away the wood grain edges, replicating the linear irregularities found on the split surface of a log. Rooted in the techniques employed by woodworkers for crafting tea utensils, this method has been ingeniously adapted to yield a range of expressive variations. Hegi Tray represents the culmination of refining this technique to craft a functional tray for everyday use.

The elongated octagonal tray, accentuating the inherent lightness of paulownia, is meticulously finished using the "oridame" technique—a process that entails incising a board to form corners, commonly employed in crafting trays like the traditional "hassun" used for tea kaiseki. Traditional woodworking skills come into play, and the tray is skillfully assembled without the reliance on metal nails or screws, upholding a genuine craftsmanship approach.

Every detail of this tray, shaped by the artisan's expertise, results in a daily-life tool that goes beyond being merely lightweight—it also boasts a gentle touch when held, seamlessly integrating comfort into daily usage.

Ideal for serving coffee or everyday meals, this tray is also crafted for hospitality. Its versatile functionality,
complemented by a water-resistant finish, ensures practicality with various dishes.

Discovering the Diverse Facets of a Tray Enhanced by Natural Plant Dyes

Suo (vermilion), Ai (indigo), and Sumi (charcoal) colors are achieved through the use of grass and wood dyeing techniques. The textured single-grain pattern varies in shades, presenting a tray for everyday use that not only features a play of colors but also offers a delightful and nuanced expression.
