This leather card holder embodies the fusion of traditional Japanese techniques used in the crafting of former warlords' armor and the skills of Kyoto's traditional craftsmen who create dolls.
In Japan, on May 5th, we celebrate Children's Day, a tradition that includes the display of traditional dolls and miniature samurai armor sets, complete with helmets and swords, in family homes. This celebration is rooted in the customs and traditions of the samurai society. Armor and helmets were vital tools for warlords, serving to protect their lives and symbolizing the safeguarding of life itself. Over time, they came to be displayed with the intention of protecting boys from accidents, illness, and disasters.
The Samurai Bag Collection is the result of a harmonious blend of Kyoto-style doll-making techniques, known as Miyake style, with modern design.
The body of the card holder is crafted from leather, while the armor-inspired design is meticulously created by stitching anodized metal sheets one by one, using custom-made braided cords.
This stitching technique is known as 'Odoshi,' a unique and intricate method. The precise, beautifully aligned weave and the lustrous appearance of the metal plates contribute to the splendid armor-like aesthetic.
Crafted in Kyoto by Masterful Artisans: The SAMURAI BAG COLLECTION
The braided cord and cowhide bag collection is the result of a collaborative effort with Kyoto-based manufacturers, Shoen Kumihimo and Kyo Kabanshi. Much of the work is meticulously done by hand, from drilling holes in the leather for attaching the metal plate, weaving in the braided cord, to sewing the leather. The sides of the body are also meticulously hand-sewn.
